The Goldendoodle is a relatively recent crossbreed, first bred in the late 20th century. The idea behind creating the Goldendoodle was to combine the best traits of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle, resulting in a friendly, intelligent, and hypoallergenic dog.
The Poodle, known for its intelligence and hypoallergenic coat, has long been a popular breed for those with allergies. They have thicky insulated curly coats and were originally bred for water retrieving. The Golden Retriever is celebrated for its friendly, patient, and sociable nature making it an excellent family pet. By combining these two breeds, breeders aimed to create a dog that would inherit the desirable traits of both parents.
The Goldendoodle first gained popularity in the United States and Australia in the 1990s. Breeders were inspired by the success of other "designer dogs," such as the Labradoodle (a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle), which was initially developed as a guide dog for people with allergies. The Goldendoodle quickly became a favorite among dog lovers for its friendly temperament, intelligence, and low-shedding coat.
Over the years, the Goldendoodle has continued to grow in popularity, with various sizes and coat types being developed. They are incredibly intelligent and highly trainable, making them ideal for obedience training and agility activities. Goldendoodles are playful and energetic, enjoying activities such as fetching, running, and swimming, which helps keep them happy and healthy. Despite their playful nature, they have a calm and gentle side, making them great therapy and service dogs. Goldendoodles are also known for their loyalty and strong bond with their owners, often seeking out human companionship (yes, you will always have company at your feet even in the bathroom!). They can adapt well to both city and country living. Their charming personality, adaptability, and hypoallergenic coat have earned them a special place in the hearts of many dog enthusiasts around the world.

At Boreal Puppies, we love a variety of Goldendoodle colours and coat types; from a solid dark red coat like Dorian & tuxedo like Mojo to phantom or merle like Oakley, Beau, & Summer. We have produced puppies that are extremely curly as well as many that have a lushes wave. We are working on producing some that have straighter fur as well.
Beyond having a dream of producing outstanding colours and coats, our main focus is creating dogs with amazing temperaments. Our parent dogs are selected based on their personalities and suitability as eager and intelligent family dogs with affectionate dispositions. Health and structure are also of high importance, as to why we health test our parent dogs.
Today, in 2025, Utah Doodles in the USA is working hard on developing the pure Goldendoodle breed (unfortunately it will not be keeping its current name). This takes many generations of stability. They are working with the AKC to create a new pure breed of dogs that will retain 50% of the traits from each the poodle and the goldendoodle.
On a much, much smaller scale, it is also a goal of Boreal Puppies to produce puppies that are high content Golden Retriever, while keeping the hypoallergenic qualities of the poodle. And, I am learning, in order to get personality, health, genetic traits, and coat colour all amazing simultaneously in lines and new generations, it takes time, dedication, love, and patience. But, this is not so hard when I am doing what I love!

Thanks for the history on Goldendoodles. We love our Aria, who will be 2 years old this month. She's a loveable, funny and gentle girl. She loves people particularly children and she plays well with other dogs. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. Aria has lots of energy and we enjoy getting outdoors with her several times a day.
Thank you, Jillian and family for being such a great breeder.
